Memorial Tribute to Gerard R. Laurence, Esquire
Gerard “Jerry” Laurence passed away on October 19, 2015, surrounded by his family. Jerry was a lifelong Worcester resident and graduate of Assumption Prep. He was raised in a classic Worcester triple-decker, living below his grandparents, native French speakers, who contributed to his fluent command of the French language. Jerry departed his home city to attend Georgetown University and Georgetown Law School, in Washington D.C. When Jerry graduated law school in 1964, he returned to Worcester and sat for the Massachusetts bar exam. Stanley Milton, son of Firm founder Charles C. Milton, graded Jerry’s exam. Stanley was so impressed by the quality of Jerry’s writing that he invited Jerry to join Milton, Milton, Hinckley and O’Neil. Jerry’s work and trial skills were exemplary from the start. In the 60’s, Jerry became a name partner, and Milton, Laurence & Dixon, LLP proudly bears his name to this day.
Jerry practiced law in Worcester and throughout the Commonwealth for more than 5 decades, all with the Firm. He was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, served as President of the Massachusetts Defense Lawyers Association, was honored by the Worcester County Bar Association for 50 years of service, and received the St. Thomas More Medal from the Worcester Red Mass Committee, to name just a few of the laurels earned and his leadership roles across over a half century of his practice of law. Along the way, Jerry mentored generations of trial lawyers, many of whom are practicing or sitting on the judicial bench today. He will be remembered by many for the calmness and compassion he showed in the face of the unanticipated challenges of the practice of law.
Jerry and his wife Lauraine were married 52 years, and were blessed with 5 children and three grandchildren, and were active parishioners of the Blessed Sacrament Parish of Worcester for over 40 years.
The predecessor to present day Milton, Laurence & Dixon, LLP, Milton and Parker, was founded in 1894 by Charles Milton and Robert Parker. As years passed, Charles Milton was succeeded by his sons, Stanley and Robert Milton. In the 1960’s the firm changed its name to include Partner Gerard Laurence. In 1984, the firm recognized partner Charles (Chuck) Dixon, adding his name to the masthead. Attorney Dixon retired from the firm in 2004. Located in downtown Worcester, Massachusetts, for over 120 years, the Firm has been within walking distance of the Courthouse.
While the legal landscape has changed over the last century, the importance of value, service and honesty have not. The Firm remains committed to providing excellent service and counsel in the best tradition of the law. We are a full service firm, providing advice and litigation services in all areas of civil litigation and worker’s compensation as well as facilitating management of life's milestones.
In 2009, the Firm was one of 4 recognized by the Massachusetts Bar Association for exemplary leadership in greening the practice of law. Additionally, we have participated in the Attorney General’s Legal Food Frenzy, raising donations for the Worcester County Food Bank. We continue to donate time as pro bono counsel for the Volunteer Lawyers Service and the Federal Court pro bono program.
Milton, Laurence & Dixon, LLP is dedicated to honoring the history of excellence begun by the Miltons and Robert Parker and driven by success. We look forward to meeting you.
